How to Detoxify

Detoxification is important in helping your body to restore balance and your vitality for life. Within your body there are a number of systems that work to eliminate toxins and harmful substances that we are exposed to everyday. With Dr. Nuzum’s two week detox plan, we will guide you through how to detox your body to restore your body to optimum health.

1. Clear Your Digestive System

First, start off by assessing your diet. The chemicals and preservatives in the foods that we eat are absorbed through our gut. Some foods create build up within our intestine and create a toxic home for microbes. Toxic buildup in your intestines increases the number of catabolic, destructive and anaerobic microorganisms. During the two week detox program follow Dr. Nuzum’s guide for the foods to avoid to reduce build up within your intestines and colon. Replace your diet with foods that aid in detoxification and elimination, such as organic and high fiber foods.

2. Clear Skin and Lungs

Your skin is the largest organ of your body. Sweating is one of the best ways to detoxify the skin, in addition to dry brushing. Dry brushing is done with a coarse brush that removes dead skin. It activates the lymphatic system and removes surface dirt and environmental residues. Start by brushing your arms and legs in the direction of your torso. Then progress to your abdomen, brushing in a clockwise manner. Have someone brush your back from side to side, from the neck to the rear end.

Your lungs take in all of the external environment that surrounds you. Think about this, if you hold a bunch of grapes by the stem, the main stem is the trachea. The large branching stems are the bronchi, the smaller stems are the bronchioles, and the individual grapes are the alveoli of the lungs. The alveoli are where we absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Practice deep breathing meditation to open these alveoli to enrich them with fresh oxygen during detoxification.

To detoxify your skin and lungs, try an aromatherapy steam bath. Draw a hot bath of unchlorinated water. If that is not available, draw a hot bath and add 2 cups of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide to the bath, wait 30 seconds before adding 2 cups of baking soda to neutralize the remaining toxins. Wait another 30 seconds and add 2 cups of Epsom salts with 5 drops of your favorite essential oil. Soak for 30 minutes.

3. Cleanse Your Kidneys

Your kidneys filter 180 liters of your blood, on a daily basis. Daily, they clear your plasma up to 60 times, reabsorb water and ions, and they secrete water. They work as a powerful blood filter, as up to a third of your blood volume is injected into the kidneys with each heartbeat.

Large doses of vitamin C is extremely healing to the kidneys. There are many herbs that heal the kidneys, parsley in particular. While Native American’s remedy was to use blends of parsley, juniper berries and raspberry leaves, Dr. Nuzum uses some of the following in his supplements to detoxify the kidneys:

  • Uva Ursi
  • Burdock root
  • Dandelion root
  • Buchu
  • Fennel seed
  • Shavegrass
  • Crushed watermelon seeds
  • Asparagus

4. Support Your Gallbladder and Liver

the-liver.jpgYour gallbladder and liver are a large piece of your detoxifying system. You can support them by taking in supplements

and foods that can help them in their processes. The juice of carrot and beets is highly beneficial. These juices help to flush out toxins from these vital organs by thinning the bile so that it flows freely, clearing the bile ducts of waste.

Coffee is an excellent substance for detoxifying the liver. Dr. Nuzum recommends doing a coffee enema to stimulate the dilation of the common bile duct, as well as the sphincter. This helps the liver to drain itself more effectively. Many of the doctor’s patients report that they expel large quantities of "stones" when doing coffee enemas.

Instructions for a coffee enema:

Brew a quart of organic coffee with distilled water. These are the only two ingredients that should be used.

Allow to cool. Do not ever take a hot coffee enema. You can burn your colon, which is very dangerous and can be very harmful to your lower intestinal health.

Pour lukewarm coffee into an enema bag. Hang the enema bag at the same level of your head.

Kneel on all fours and insert the nozzle of the enema tube into your anus. Keep pressure on the tube so that the coffee cannot escape the enema bag.

Allow the coffee to flow freely into rectum and retain for as long as possible. The longer you retain the coffee, the deeper the cleansing action.

Additional support of the gallbladder and liver can be done with herbal supplementation. Dr. Nuzum’s favorite is essiac tea- the combination of slippery elm bark, burdock root, shepherd's purse and Turkish rhubarb. Herbs that detoxify the liver and gallbladder are as follows:

  • Milk thistle
  • Turmeric root
  • Ginger root
  • Burdock root
  • Dandelion root
  • Artichoke
  • Barberry
  • Oregon grape root
  • Chicory root

5. Lymphatic drainage

The lymphatic system is made up of the thymus, lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, appendix, and the tissue that makes up the thymus. Lymphatic fluid (known as lymph) is a thixotropic fluid that gels and hardens as it cools. Healthy thyroid and adrenal function maintains a healthy body temperature, which helps maintain a fluid lymphatic state so that it can properly flow and drain. This is one of the reasons that it is so important for those with chronic illness to achieve and maintain thyroid and adrenal gland health.

Spending time in the sauna is very helpful in detoxifying the lymphatic system. Just like butter hardens as it cools, so does the lymphatic fluid. Sauna therapy heats up the lymphatic fluid, liquefying it and freeing it so that it can flow easily. Using the sauna mimics the same happenings when you experience a fever. It enhances white blood cell count and fights off infection and viruses. When detoxing, use the sauna for 10-20 minutes or for as long as you feel comfortable. Do not exceed 30 minutes or more than twice in a day.
